In the late evening of July 6, 2023, tragedy struck in Boston's Roxbury neighborhood, forever altering the lives of a local family. Tywon Meek, a 19-year-old Black / African American male, was fatally shot near a playground on Leyland Street. Boston Police Department officers responded to a call for a person shot at approximately 11:49 PM. Upon their arrival, they discovered Meek suffering from gunshot wounds.
Despite immediate medical attention, he was pronounced dead at the scene.
The initial investigation into the death of Tywon Meek was launched by the Boston Police Department, with assistance from the Suffolk County District Attorney's office. In the days following the shooting, authorities publicly identified Meek as the victim and appealed to the community for any information that could help them identify the person or persons responsible for his death. The incident was one of two crime scenes within a half-mile radius that night, although officials did not immediately confirm if the events were connected.
After a thorough investigation, a significant breakthrough in the case came in December 2023. A Suffolk County grand jury indicted 28-year-old Anthony Ramos of Dorchester for the murder of Tywon Meek. At the time of the indictment, Ramos was already in custody on a firearm charge that was related to the case. The charges against him included first-degree murder, possession of a firearm, possession of ammunition, and carrying a loaded firearm. Suffolk County District Attorney Kevin Hayden and Boston Mayor Michelle Wu both condemned the gun violence that led to Meek's death and expressed their condolences to his family. The District Attorney's office pledged the support of its victim witness advocate team to assist Meek's family through the court proceedings.
