On February 2, 2023, at approximately 5:20 p.m., Newark police responded to multiple 911 calls reporting gunfire and a person lying on the ground near 161 Avon Avenue, adjacent to the Pilgrim Village Housing Complex. Upon arrival, officers discovered 35-year-old Newark resident Rasheed Lee with a severe gunshot wound to the head. He was immediately transported to University Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries the following day.
