Jawad R. Smith was a 22-year-old Black male from Newark who was struck down on the sidewalk as if the street itself had turned against him. On the evening of May 27, 2017, he was walking in the 400 block of Grove Street in Irvington when two men approached and opened fire, hitting him multiple times; he died at the scene, leaving a stunned neighborhood to reckon with how quickly an ordinary walk became a life’s abrupt end.
