In a tragic turn of events stemming from a neighborhood dispute, 20-year-old Jason Caudle was fatally shot in Irvington, New Jersey, on August 8, 2019. Caudle, a young father of two, was attempting to act as a peacemaker between his friend and neighbor, 39-year-old Kaizen Crossen, and another individual. The disagreement had been escalating over several days, and Caudle stepped in to try and resolve the conflict peacefully.
On that Thursday morning, at approximately 11:30 a.m. on the 300 block of Myrtle Avenue, the situation escalated dramatically. Despite Caudle's efforts to de-escalate the tension, Crossen opened fire with a rifle, striking the unarmed Caudle. The motive for the shooting appeared to be rooted in the ongoing altercation that Caudle was trying to mediate.
His mother recounted that her son had no personal conflict with Crossen and was simply trying to encourage a peaceful resolution when he was killed.
Following the shooting of Caudle, the incident quickly evolved into a larger-scale engagement when police arrived at the scene. Crossen, who was equipped with body armor, a rifle, another firearm, and a significant amount of ammunition, engaged in a shootout with the responding officers. In the exchange of gunfire, three police officers sustained non-life-threatening injuries. Both Jason Caudle and his assailant, Kaizen Crossen, were transported to a local hospital where they were both pronounced dead. The investigation into the incident was subsequently handled by the state Attorney General's Office due to the involvement of police in the death of Crossen.
