In the summer of 2017, the life of a young man was abruptly cut short on the streets of Trenton, New Jersey. Jerome J. Thomas, a 21-year-old Black male, was fatally shot on the evening of Friday, August 4th. The incident occurred around 7:50 p.m. in the 600 block of Southard Street, where Thomas was seated inside his vehicle. He was a resident of the Somerset section of Franklin Township in the neighboring Somerset County.
According to reports, police responded to the area after
receiving alerts of gunfire. Upon their arrival, they discovered Thomas suffering from multiple gunshot wounds to his torso. He was found unconscious and unresponsive in the street. Emergency medical services were dispatched, and he was quickly transported to a local hospital for treatment. Despite the efforts of medical personnel, Jerome J. Thomas succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead shortly after arriving at the hospital.
The investigation into the homicide was taken over by the Mercer County Homicide Task Force. Authorities described the perpetrator as a Black male who fled the scene immediately after the shooting. In the years that have passed since the fatal shooting, the case has grown cold. Investigators have faced significant challenges due to a lack of witnesses coming forward with information.
As of now, no arrests have been made in connection with the murder of Jerome J. Thomas, and the gunman remains at large. Law enforcement officials have periodically urged the public for assistance, hoping that someone with knowledge of the events that transpired that evening will come forward. The case remains an open and unsolved homicide, leaving a family without answers and a community still searching for justice.
