On the evening of October 23, 2017, a burst of gunfire shattered the night on Myrtle Avenue in Irvington, New Jersey, leaving a man fatally wounded. The victim was identified as Israel L. Washington, a 45-year-old male from the neighboring city of Newark. The shooting occurred at approximately 8:37 p.m. in front of a residence at 440 Myrtle Avenue.
Emergency medical services were dispatched to the scene and rushed Washington to University Hospital in Newark in a desperate attempt to save
his life. Despite their efforts, he was pronounced dead at 9:45 p.m. The cause of death was determined to be the gunshot wounds he sustained in the attack.
The Essex County Prosecutor's Office Homicide/Major Crimes Task Force immediately launched an investigation into the fatal shooting. Law enforcement officials processed the crime scene and began seeking information from the public to help piece together the events that led to Washington's death.
