In the early hours of Sunday, May 15, 2022, a 36-year-old man of Guyanese descent, Curt Johnson, was fatally shot in Irvington, New Jersey. The incident occurred around 3:22 a.m. in the vicinity of Prospect Street and Nesbit Terrace. Irvington Police officers responded to reports of gunfire and discovered Johnson at the scene with multiple gunshot wounds. He was pronounced dead at 3:58 a.m.
At the time of his death, Johnson was a resident of East Orange.
Johnson, who was also known as 'Ceejay,' was an aspiring singer and songwriter who had established his own music label, Roll Out Records. In addition to his musical pursuits, he was employed as a telephone maintainer for New York City Transit, where he had worked for eight years. He was remembered by colleagues as a well-liked and easy-going individual with a caring disposition. Friends in the music industry recalled his passion and dedication to his craft.
According to relatives, Johnson was leaving a birthday celebration for his brother when the shooting occurred. While the motive for the killing remains unclear, family members have indicated that they do not believe robbery was the reason, as Johnson was reportedly still wearing his jewelry when he was found. The Essex County Prosecutor's Office Homicide/Major Crimes Task Force is leading the investigation into the fatal shooting.
