On a Monday afternoon, just two days after Christmas in 2021, a young Black man named Khaleel Powell, who was 26 years old, had his life cut short by gun violence. A resident of Orange, New Jersey, Powell was known as a funny and loving father who had a passion for cars and music. His life, however, came to a tragic end on December 27th in the neighboring town of Irvington.
The fatal incident occurred in broad daylight on the 400 block of Stuyvesant Avenue, not far from Irvington High School. It was there that Khaleel Powell was shot. Emergency services were called to the scene, but his injuries were too severe. He was pronounced dead at 3:35 p.m., right where he had been attacked. The sudden violence left a community shaken and a family grieving an unimaginable loss.
In the wake of the shooting, the Essex County Prosecutor's Office Homicide/Major Crimes Task Force launched an investigation into Powell's death.
Authorities appealed to the public for any information that might lead to the apprehension of those responsible, establishing a confidential tips line for witnesses to come forward. Despite these efforts, the case has grown cold. To this day, no arrests have been made in connection with the murder of Khaleel Powell, and no suspects have been publicly identified. The investigation remains active and ongoing, leaving his family and community still waiting for justice.
