On the night of January 31, 2020, Gonzalo Augustin, 53, a male whose ethnicity has not been publicly reported, was found dead from a gunshot wound inside a residence in south Phoenix, Arizona. Phoenix police had been called to the home near the area of 28th Street and Roeser Road after reports of shots fired. When officers arrived, they discovered Sabrina Miran-Garcia lying in front of the house with fatal gunshot wounds, and witnesses indicated that another victim remained inside the
residence.
According to investigators and witness accounts, the suspected gunman, Brian Santiago, initially confronted Miran-Garcia outside the home and shot her in the front yard. He then went back into the house, where he shot Augustin before moving to another area of the residence and turning the gun on himself. When officers searched the interior, they found Augustin deceased from a gunshot wound and Santiago suffering from what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot injury; Santiago was transported to a hospital, where he later died.
Subsequent information gathered by authorities and compiled in public records indicates that all three individuals lived in the same home, and the incident has been classified as a domestic-violence murder-suicide involving a single firearm. However, police have not released details about the exact nature of the relationships between Augustin, Miran-Garcia, and Santiago, nor have they publicly identified a clear motive for the shootings.
