In the summer of 2014, a joyous occasion turned into a scene of tragedy, forever altering the lives of two families. On June 17th, Bruce Miles Jr., a 27-year-old male, was attending a preschool graduation party in Irvington, New Jersey. The celebration, held to honor the young daughter of Ronald Smith, was filled with friends and family, including Miles, who was a friend of the child's mother.
An otherwise festive atmosphere soured when a verbal dispute between Miles and Smith escalated into a physical altercation. The two men engaged in a fistfight at the barbecue. Following the fight, Smith retrieved a handgun from his vehicle. In a moment of passion, he returned and shot Miles. The single gunshot proved to be fatal for the young man.
In the aftermath of the shooting, an investigation led to the arrest of Ronald Smith, then 29 years old. He was charged in connection with the death of Bruce Miles Jr.
