On the evening of November 15, 2018, Sunil Edla, a 61-year-old Indian-origin man, was preparing to leave his home in Ventnor City, New Jersey, for his overnight shift as a night auditor in Atlantic City. After starting his car, he briefly went back inside his residence. As he returned and walked down the stairs of his second-floor apartment, he was ambushed and shot multiple times on the sidewalk. The fatal encounter occurred around 8 p.m. outside his home on North Nashville Avenue. When police responded to a 911 call, they found Edla unresponsive with gunshot wounds and he was pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigators quickly discovered that Edla's vehicle, a 2002 Subaru Forester, was missing. The car was later located by Atlantic City police. Through surveillance footage and a collaborative investigation involving the Ventnor City Police Department, the Atlantic City Police Department, and the Atlantic County Prosecutor's Office, a suspect was identified.
The morning after the shooting, on November 16, 2018, the Atlantic City SWAT team arrested 16-year-old Angelo Delgado in connection with the murder.
Delgado, who was a juvenile at the time of the homicide, was taken into custody without incident. He was subsequently charged with murder, felony murder, robbery, carjacking, and unlawful possession of a handgun. Authorities determined that Delgado had been waiting for Edla to emerge from his home with the intention of stealing his car. Following his arrest, Delgado was waived up to be tried as an adult.
Years later, Angelo Delgado, then 22, pleaded guilty to first-degree felony murder. In his plea, he admitted to shooting Sunil Edla while attempting to steal his car and then fleeing in the vehicle. Subsequently, he was sentenced to thirty years in New Jersey State Prison for the crime.
