In the summer of 2015, a violent encounter in South Toms River, New Jersey, tragically cut short the life of 27-year-old Willie Z. Love III. On the evening of June 8th, Love was driving a vehicle with three passengers when another car, a 2004 Dodge Nitro, pulled up alongside them. The driver of the Nitro, later identified as Marcus Samuels, recklessly fired a handgun into Love's vehicle. A single shot struck Willie Love in the shoulder and chest.
Despite being rushed to Community Medical Center in Toms River, he succumbed to his injuries. The incident was ruled a homicide.
The investigation into the shooting quickly pointed towards 26-year-old Marcus Samuels of Bayville as the primary suspect. A warrant was issued for his arrest, and on June 12, 2015, Samuels turned himself in to the authorities in the presence of his attorney. He was subsequently charged with murder and three weapons counts and was held on $1 million bail. Another individual, 21-year-old Jennifer Rauscher, also from Bayville, was implicated in the case. She was charged with hindering the apprehension of Samuels for allegedly providing false information to detectives during their investigation. Rauscher was arrested and later released after posting $100,000 bail.
While awaiting trial at the Ocean County Jail, Marcus Samuels engaged in further criminal activity. He conspired with other inmates in an attempt to influence a witness, hoping to persuade them to retract or alter a statement they had previously given to law enforcement. This act of witness tampering added to the charges against him. Ultimately, on June 4, 2021, Samuels pleaded guilty to aggravated manslaughter in the death of Willie Love. He also pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit witness tampering and an unrelated charge of aggravated assault. On July 26, 2021, Marcus Samuels, then 32, was sentenced to ten years in state prison for the death of Willie Z. Love III, with his sentences for the other charges to run concurrently.
