Richard W. Pereira, a 26-year-old male, tragically lost his life on January 28, 2017, in what was determined to be a hunting accident in a wooded area off Locker Street in Berkeley Township, a community near Toms River, New Jersey. Born in Toms River, Pereira had spent most of his life in the nearby town of Waretown. An avid outdoorsman, he was deer hunting with his father and two friends on that fateful Saturday morning.
The group was in an area known as Johnson's Pit when one of his
companions, a 41-year-old man from Forked River, discharged his shotgun, striking Pereira. The shooting was reported to the Berkeley Township Police via a 911 call. Despite immediate first aid efforts by his father at the scene, his injuries were fatal. Emergency services responded, and a doctor remotely pronounced him dead shortly after the incident.
The Ocean County Prosecutor's Office and the Ocean County Sheriff's Department were involved in the investigation. The initial reports indicated that the shooting was accidental, and the shotgun was taken into evidence by the Ocean County Sheriff's Department. In the immediate aftermath, law enforcement officials stated that the investigation was ongoing.
