In the late hours of a Wednesday evening, the sterile calm of Community Medical Center in Toms River was broken by the arrival of a vehicle that would set in motion a complex homicide investigation. On March 9, 2022, a 36-year-old Black / African American male named Jimmy Mosley from South Toms River was dropped off at the hospital, unresponsive and suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. The driver of the vehicle and a passenger quickly departed the scene, one leaving in the car and the other on foot, leaving Mosley to succumb to his injuries. He was pronounced deceased at the hospital.
The ensuing investigation by the Ocean County Prosecutor's Office Major Crime Unit, Toms River Township Police Department, and the Ocean County Sheriff's Office Crime Scene Investigation Unit began to unravel the events that led to Mosley's death. It was determined that Mosley, in the company of an accomplice, had gone to a residence in Berkeley Township with the intent to commit a robbery.
Both Mosley and his associate were armed. During the course of this attempted robbery, a physical altercation broke out between Mosley and the resident of the home.
The confrontation escalated dramatically when the resident, who was also armed, fired three shots at Mosley. Wounded, Mosley and his accomplice fled the scene. It was after this escape that Mosley was left at the hospital. A subsequent post-mortem examination revealed that the cause of death was a gunshot wound to the back that had pierced his lung.
The investigation led to the identification and arrest of two individuals in connection with the incident. George Burke, Mosley's alleged accomplice in the robbery, was apprehended. The resident of the home where the shooting occurred, Craig Dillard, was also taken into custody. Burke faced a litany of charges including robbery, conspiracy, and multiple firearms offenses. Dillard was charged with offenses related to drug activity, including possession of marijuana with intent to distribute, and tampering with physical evidence.
