In the early morning hours of February 10, 2019, tragedy struck the city of Atlantic City, New Jersey, with the death of Demond Tally, a 45-year-old man. Tally, a beloved youth football coach, was gunned down on Presbyterian Avenue shortly after 5:00 a.m. He had just left the home of his longtime friend, then-City Councilman Marty Small Sr., who would later become mayor.
The community was left reeling from the loss of a man described as a 'staple in the community' who was always upbeat
and positive. Tally was no stranger to heartache, as his own son, Demond Cottman, had been fatally shot in 2016. In the wake of his son's death, Tally had dedicated himself to honoring his memory and supporting his young grandson.
For more than two years, the investigation into Tally's murder continued, leaving his family and friends searching for answers. Then, in April 2021, a breakthrough came as the Atlantic County Prosecutor's Office announced charges against three men: Steven Martinez, 27, Shamar Scott, 25, and Deshawn Hose, 23. The charges were the result of a sprawling four-year investigation into a major drug-trafficking operation.
Prosecutors alleged that Martinez, a leader of the drug ring, orchestrated Tally's murder, which was then carried out by Scott and Hose. While a specific motive for the shooting was not immediately provided, authorities stated their investigation revealed no ties between Tally and the drug organization.
The legal proceedings brought a measure of justice for Demond Tally's loved ones. In March 2025, a jury found Shamar Scott guilty of murder and conspiracy to commit murder, among other charges. He was later sentenced to 45 years in prison. In October 2025, Steven Martinez pleaded guilty to two counts of aggravated manslaughter, admitting his role in the deaths of both Demond Tally and his son, Demond Cottman. The case against Deshawn Hose is still pending.
