In the late afternoon of February 29, 2024, a 37-year-old man, identified by the initials H.C., was fatally shot on South Florida Avenue in Atlantic City. Authorities arrived at the scene just before 6 p.m. to find H.C. with gunshot wounds. He was pronounced dead at the scene. H.C. was a father of six and the primary caregiver for two of his children, who were 9 and 14 years old at the time.

had taken to Facebook to express a chilling premonition, stating, 'People who suppose to love me really want me in jail or dead. That's a different type of HATE...' This social media post cast a somber shadow over the ensuing events. His life had seen previous encounters with violence; he had been a victim of a shooting in March 2010 and was facing several pending cases, including allegations of domestic violence that had led to his incarceration in January 2024. Despite a public safety assessment recommending he remain in custody, he had been released after a detention hearing.
The neighborhood where H.C. lost his life had been the scene of other recent violence. In November 2023, another man, Luis Rosa Rodriguez, was fatally shot on the same block. Additionally, a drug-trafficking ring operating nearby had been dismantled the previous year, leading to 16 arrests.
As of now, no arrests have been made in connection with H.C.'s murder. The Atlantic County Prosecutor's Office and the Atlantic City Police Department's Major Crimes Unit are actively investigating the shooting. Authorities have appealed to the public for any information that might lead to the apprehension of the person or persons responsible for his death.
