On the morning of May 19, a fatal shooting in the 300 block of North Tennessee Avenue in Atlantic City, New Jersey, claimed the life of 28-year-old Jahmil Greenidge. Authorities responded to a report of a shooting at approximately 8:00 a.m. to find Greenidge with a gunshot wound. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The incident, which occurred in a well-traveled area in broad daylight, prompted an immediate and collaborative investigation by the Atlantic County Prosecutor's Office Major Crimes Unit and the Atlantic City Police Department.
In the initial stages of the investigation, law enforcement sought the public's assistance, releasing images of a black Hyundai Sonata with tinted windows that was seen on surveillance video before the homicide. Investigators believed the vehicle, possibly a newer model with a temporary license plate, could be connected to the shooting.
This appeal to the public was part of a comprehensive effort involving multiple law enforcement agencies to bring closure to Greenidge's family.
The investigation uncovered that the shooting may have stemmed from a car crash that had occurred in March. Following the accident, Denzel Garrison, 28, of Newark, allegedly threatened Greenidge and his family. Authorities found a conversation on Garrison's phone in which someone stated that Greenidge 'gotta go,' to which Garrison reportedly replied, 'Fact I'm on it.' The investigation further revealed that Garrison had arranged to meet with 30-year-old Laquine Demby of Pleasantville in Atlantic City on the day of the shooting. Video surveillance captured a left-handed man shooting Greenidge as he entered an apartment complex; Garrison is left-handed.
On October 12, following months of investigation, both Denzel Garrison and Laquine Demby were arrested. Garrison was apprehended in Newark, while Demby was taken into custody in Pleasantville. Both men were charged with first-degree murder and first-degree conspiracy. Garrison faced additional charges for weapon-related offenses. In December, an Atlantic County Grand Jury returned indictments against both men. They are currently being held at the Atlantic County Justice Facility.
