In the midnight hour of October 9, 2019, the life of 24-year-old Carlos S. Perry, a Black male from Camden, New Jersey, was tragically cut short. The calm of the night was shattered by the activation of a ShotSpotter device near the 1300 block of Federal Street, signaling gunfire and prompting an immediate response from the Camden County Police Department.
Upon their arrival at the scene, officers discovered a grim tableau; Perry was on the ground, suffering from a gunshot wound.
Emergency medical services were quickly summoned, and Perry was rushed to Cooper University Hospital, a place of hope that would unfortunately become the final setting of his life's story. Despite the urgent efforts of the medical staff, the damage inflicted by the gunshot was too severe. Carlos S. Perry succumbed to his injuries at the hospital, leaving behind a community and family to grapple with the sudden and violent loss. His death was officially ruled a homicide, the result of the single gunshot wound he sustained.
