In the early hours of February 27, 2021, Jose Miguel Medero, a 51-year-old Hispanic male, was found shot while in his vehicle in New Brunswick, New Jersey. Patrolling officers from the New Brunswick Police Department discovered him in the vicinity of Seaman Street and Remsen Avenue at approximately 1:18 a.m. Medero had sustained a fatal gunshot wound and was pronounced dead at the scene.
The Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office and the New Brunswick Police Department immediately launched a homicide investigation into the shooting. Their collaborative efforts led to the identification of a suspect. Investigators determined that John Santanna, 20, of nearby Bound Brook, had shot Medero while he was seated in his car.
The motive for the shooting has not been publicly disclosed by officials.
A few days later, on March 1, 2021, authorities announced the arrest of John Santanna. He was charged with first-degree murder and two second-degree weapons offenses, including unlawful possession of a firearm and possession of a firearm for an illegal purpose. Following his arrest, Santanna was held at the Middlesex County Adult Correction Center, awaiting a pre-trial detention hearing. The investigation was noted as active and ongoing, with authorities appealing to the public for any additional information.
