In the early evening of March 12, 2024, the city of New Brunswick, New Jersey, was shaken by an act of violence that claimed the life of 23-year-old Numi Simmons, a Black male. At approximately 6:53 p.m., the sound of gunfire pierced the air near the intersection of Throop Avenue and Delavan Street. When New Brunswick police officers arrived at the scene, they discovered two men who had been shot.
Both victims were rushed to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital for urgent medical
care. Tragically, Numi Simmons succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at the hospital. The second man, whose identity was not publicly released, was reported to be in critical condition following the shooting. The incident left the local community in a state of shock and mourning for the young life that had been cut short.
In the days following the shooting, law enforcement officials began their investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death of Numi Simmons.
