In the city of New Brunswick, New Jersey, a violent encounter on March 1, 2014, tragically cut short the life of 30-year-old Rahim Fuqua. That Saturday afternoon, Fuqua was at his home on Seaman Street when he was targeted by a group of men. Despite being armed with a handgun, it is not believed that Fuqua fired his weapon during the altercation. He sustained critical injuries in the shooting and was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he succumbed to his wounds two days later, on March 3, 2014.
The brazen daylight attack also injured an innocent bystander, a 34-year-old man who was sitting in a parked minivan and was treated for a gunshot wound to his arm.
The investigation into Fuqua's death quickly led to the identification of three suspects. Christian A. Peguero, a 25-year-old from South Brunswick, was among the assailants and was himself wounded in the leg during the shooting. He was initially charged with hindering the investigation, but this was soon upgraded to murder. The other two men charged with murder were 19-year-old Steven Perez and 21-year-old Jonathan Rodriguez, both residents of New Brunswick. While Peguero was taken into custody, a manhunt was launched for Perez and Rodriguez.
The search for the remaining suspects extended beyond New Jersey. On March 13, 2014, Jonathan Rodriguez, who was reported to have connections to the Latin Kings gang, was apprehended in Bucks County, Pennsylvania. His arrest also led to a significant drug bust, uncovering a large-scale heroin operation. The final suspect, Steven Perez, was located and arrested in Columbus, Ohio, on April 15, 2014. All three men were then held in custody, facing charges of murder and conspiracy to possess a handgun for their roles in the death of Rahim Fuqua.
