On June 4, 2023, at approximately 10:54 p.m., 28-year-old Markel Williams was fatally shot near the intersection of Throop Avenue and Delavan Street in New Brunswick, New Jersey. Emergency responders arrived at the scene and transported Williams to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The initial investigation indicated that the shooting was not a random act of violence, and authorities did not believe there was a threat to the public.
