In New Brunswick, New Jersey, a Sunday afternoon turned tragic when 31-year-old Ahmad Sannoh was fatally shot. A young Black scientist, his life was cut short following an altercation with his own brother. The incident, which unfolded on February 22, 2026, was not a random act of violence but the culmination of a family dispute.
The day of the shooting, shortly before 1 p.m., police received a 911 call reporting a physical altercation between two brothers at their family home on
Riverside Drive, accompanied by the sound of gunshots. Witnesses reported seeing Ahmad and his younger brother, 28-year-old Hassan Sannoh, arguing outside the residence. Following the argument, Hassan allegedly retrieved a black object from a book bag in his car. Despite being questioned by family members if the object was a gun, he did not respond and proceeded to enter the house.
Once inside, multiple gunshots were heard. Ahmad was discovered on the kitchen floor with multiple gunshot wounds. He was rushed to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. In his final moments, Ahmad was reportedly bringing groceries upstairs for his mother. Hassan fled the scene in his Nissan but was later apprehended by police.
Hassan Sannoh has been charged with first-degree murder, possession of a handgun for an illegal purpose, and unlawful possession of a weapon. He is currently being held at the Middlesex County Adult Correctional Center awaiting a pre-trial detention hearing. The investigation into the shooting is ongoing, and the firearm used has not yet been recovered.
Ahmad Sannoh was remembered as a kind and warm individual who touched the lives of many. A 2018 graduate of Bloomfield College with a degree in biology, he worked as a scientist. He was also a religious scholar who attended Arabic school and could recite the Quran. Friends and family recalled his love for basketball and his unwavering loyalty. A GoFundMe campaign was established to support his family, who have been displaced from their home due to the ongoing investigation.
