On a Sunday morning in New Brunswick, New Jersey, the life of a young man was tragically cut short. Nathaniel Edwards Jr., a 23-year-old male from East Brunswick, was found with a gunshot wound on January 9, 2022. The shooting occurred around 10:18 a.m. in the vicinity of Remsen Avenue and Seaman Street. He was quickly transported to a nearby hospital, but tragically, he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead.
Known affectionately as “BJ” to his loved ones, Nathaniel was
born in New Brunswick on August 28, 1998. Friends and family remembered him as a protector, a good brother, and a loyal friend. He had a close bond with his best friend of over ten years, Bernardo. Nathaniel was a graduate of New Brunswick High School's class of 2017 and had most recently been employed at a Shop-Rite in East Brunswick. His interests included playing video games, modeling, and spending time at malls and beaches with his brothers.
The investigation into his death led authorities to identify a suspect. Malik Stringer, a 23-year-old from North Brunswick, was identified as the alleged shooter. On January 24, 2022, members of the Federal Bureau of Investigation apprehended Stringer in Atlanta, Georgia.
Following his arrest, Stringer was charged with first-degree murder and first-degree attempted murder. He also faced a charge of second-degree unlawful possession of a handgun. After his capture in Georgia, he awaited an extradition hearing to be returned to New Jersey to face the charges. Upon his return, he was to be held at the Middlesex County Adult Correction Center pending a pre-trial detention hearing.
