On a late summer evening in New Brunswick, New Jersey, the life of Lionel M. McCauley, a 28-year-old Black man, was tragically cut short. On September 13, 2020, McCauley, a talented actor and spoken word artist from the Somerset section of Franklin Township, was at a house party on Delafield Street. The gathering, which was also a birthday celebration for a friend, took a horrific turn just before 1:20 a.m.
when violence erupted.
In a sudden and brutal act, a vehicle stopped in the middle of the street, and five individuals emerged, opening fire on the partygoers. The hail of bullets struck multiple people, turning a scene of celebration into one of chaos and bloodshed. When police arrived, they discovered a devastating scene with eight people suffering from gunshot wounds. McCauley was rushed to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, but tragically, his injuries proved fatal. Another man, 23-year-old Anthony Robinson, also lost his life in the shooting, and several others were left with serious injuries.
The investigation into the senseless killings was launched by the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office and the New Brunswick Police Department. For months, the community mourned the loss of McCauley, who was remembered for his positive energy and kind spirit, while awaiting answers. The break in the case came on February 5, 2021, when a 19-year-old man from Somerset was arrested in connection with the fatal shooting. He was charged with two counts of first-degree murder, conspiracy to commit murder, seven counts of attempted murder, and several weapons offenses. The investigation revealed that the suspect and others had driven to the party and deliberately fired into the crowd. While an arrest was made, the motive behind this tragic act of violence that claimed the lives of two young men has not been publicly detailed.
