On May 7, 2009, Carol Sandberg, age 60, and her husband Barry were found brutally murdered in their home in the Bay Park neighborhood of San Diego. The couple, avid motorcyclists who had been married for 30 years, were discovered in their bedroom, having been stabbed to death. Investigators initially considered various motives, including robbery, as Barry’s prized Harley-Davidson motorcycle and other valuables were missing from the home.
However, the crime scene suggested a more targeted attack, as many items of value were left behind, casting doubt on robbery as the sole motive.
The murder weapon, a bloody knife, was recovered from the scene, along with additional physical evidence, yet no suspects were immediately identified. The case has remained unsolved for years, despite continuous efforts from family, friends, and law enforcement. A $51,000 reward has been offered for information that could lead to an arrest, but as of now, the case remains one of San Diego’s cold cases. The mystery surrounding the Sandbergs' deaths continues to perplex investigators and the community, with loved ones still hoping for a breakthrough in the case.
