On the evening of March 11, 2021, a day that should have been filled with celebration, tragedy struck in Newark, New Jersey. Debra Derrick, a 63-year-old female, was on her front porch on Lehigh Avenue, surrounded by family. They were gathered to mark a dual occasion: her 63rd birthday and to honor the memory of her late twin sister, who had passed away seven years prior.
As they prepared to release balloons in a touching tribute, the festive atmosphere was shattered by the sound of gunfire around 8 p.m.
In the ensuing chaos, it became horrifically clear that Debra had been struck by the gunfire. She was rushed to University Hospital with what would prove to be fatal gunshot wounds and was pronounced dead shortly after her arrival. Her sister later recounted that in her final moments, Debra's selfless nature shone through as she tried to usher her two granddaughters to safety inside the house, caught in a crossfire that was not meant for her. For more than a year, her senseless killing remained unsolved, prompting law enforcement to offer a significant reward for information.
The investigation eventually led to a heartbreaking breakthrough. In April 2022, authorities announced the arrests of two brothers, 21-year-old Jonathan Ritchie and 19-year-old Josiah Ritchie. The two men were charged with murder, conspiracy to commit murder, and weapons-related offenses in connection with the death of Debra Derrick. Officials stated that she was not the intended target of the shooting. The brothers were taken into custody and are being held at the Essex County Correctional Facility.
