On the evening of July 12, 2021, a 56-year-old man named Phu Tsewang was found dead in a residence on Avenue A in Mahwah, New Jersey. Responding to a 911 call, police discovered Tsewang had sustained multiple gunshot wounds. The call to emergency services was reportedly made by the man who would soon become the primary suspect in the case.
The investigation quickly zeroed in on Milan Ghimire, a 23-year-old co-worker of Tsewang's at a local gas station. The shooting occurred at Ghimire's own residence, which some reports indicate he also shared with Tsewang.
Following the incident, Ghimire fled the scene.
Authorities tracked Ghimire to the Bronx, New York, where he was apprehended by the New York Police Department's Emergency Services Unit. In a 911 call, Ghimire allegedly admitted to the dispatcher that he had just shot someone. He was subsequently arrested and charged with first-degree murder, second-degree possession of a firearm for an unlawful purpose, and tampering with evidence. Ghimire was held in New York pending extradition to New Jersey to face the charges.
