In the early morning hours of June 5, 2023, tragedy struck in the Greenville neighborhood of Jersey City. Tyshawn Smith, a 15-year-old Black male, was found with a gunshot wound to his abdomen at approximately 4:20 a.m. near 124 Wilkinson Avenue. Responding to a 911 call, Jersey City police officers discovered the injured teenager. Despite the efforts to save him, Tyshawn was pronounced dead at the scene roughly thirty-five minutes later.
