In the early morning hours of June 5, 2023, tragedy struck in the Greenville neighborhood of Jersey City. Tyshawn Smith, a 15-year-old Black male, was found with a gunshot wound to his abdomen at approximately 4:20 a.m. near 124 Wilkinson Avenue. Responding to a 911 call, Jersey City police officers discovered the injured teenager. Despite the efforts to save him, Tyshawn was pronounced dead at the scene roughly thirty-five minutes later.
The Regional Medical Examiner's Office later confirmed that the cause of death was the gunshot wound and officially ruled it a homicide.
The investigation into the death of the teenager moved swiftly. Members of the Hudson County Prosecutor's Office Homicide Unit took the lead in the case. Their efforts resulted in an arrest just four days later, on June 9, 2023. The suspect, a 14-year-old male from Jersey City, was taken into custody at the Hudson County Prosecutor's Office in Secaucus. Due to his status as a juvenile, his name has not been publicly released.
The unnamed teen suspect is facing serious charges for his alleged role in Tyshawn's death. He has been charged as a juvenile with aggravated manslaughter, possession of a weapon, and possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose. Authorities have not released additional details about the circumstances leading up to the shooting, citing the confidentiality of juvenile matters.
