In the early hours of a Tuesday morning in Jersey City, the life of David Davon Jones, a 24-year-old man, was tragically cut short. Just after midnight on April 30, 2024, police responded to reports of gunfire in the area of Audubon Avenue and College Street. Upon their arrival, they discovered an extensive crime scene and found Jones unresponsive at 1 College St. He had sustained a gunshot wound to his upper body.
Emergency services transported him to Jersey City Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead shortly after 1:30 a.m.
The investigation into the shooting also revealed a second victim, a 23-year-old man, who was found nearby with a gunshot wound to an upper extremity. His injuries were not considered life-threatening. The incident, which unfolded near the campus of New Jersey City University, was quickly determined by authorities to be an isolated event with no ongoing threat to the university community. Neighbors reported hearing multiple gunshots, with one resident recalling a series of about six shots, a brief pause, and then another round of gunfire before a black vehicle was seen leaving the area.
In the weeks that followed, the Hudson County Prosecutor's Office and the Jersey City Police Department actively pursued leads in the case. Their investigation led to the arrests of two Jersey City men, 23-year-old Nyzir Wilson and 23-year-old Stephon Murphy. Both men face a series of charges, including robbery, burglary, and several weapons-related offenses. In a significant development, Wilson was also charged with attempted murder. Following their arrests, both suspects were being held at the Hudson County Correctional Facility as they awaited court appearances.
