In the crisp morning air of November 13, 2021, a burst of violence shattered the calm on the 900 block of North Main Street in Pleasantville, New Jersey. Ivan W. Smith, a 41-year-old man from the nearby community of Somers Point, was found lying on the sidewalk with a gunshot wound. The tragic event unfolded at approximately 9:19 a.m., a time when the neighborhood was just beginning its weekend rhythm.
Despite the swift arrival of police, alerted by a ShotSpotter notification and a 911 call, and the immediate efforts of medical personnel to perform CPR, Smith was pronounced dead at the scene.
The initial hours of the investigation were marked by an intense search for answers, with the Atlantic County Prosecutor's Office Major Crimes Unit and the Pleasantville Police Department launching a cooperative inquiry. Early on, authorities determined that Smith was the victim of a fatal shooting during a carjacking. The investigation revealed that the perpetrator had first unsuccessfully attempted to break into another vehicle before approaching Smith. A single gunshot later, Smith’s vehicle was gone, and his life was tragically cut short.
The search for the person responsible led law enforcement to Jermaine Wharton of Pleasantville. At the time of the senseless act, Wharton was already on probation and had several pending charges against him. His subsequent arrest brought a sense of relief to the community, though it could not undo the profound loss felt by Smith's loved ones. The legal process culminated in February 2023, when a jury found Wharton guilty on multiple counts, including murder, felony murder, and carjacking.
In April 2023, justice was delivered in an Atlantic County courtroom as Jermaine Wharton, then 33, was sentenced to 43 years in state prison. Due to his history as a persistent offender, he received an extended term. Under the conditions of his sentence, Wharton will be required to serve at least 36 ½ years before he becomes eligible for parole, ensuring a long period of incarceration for the man who so callously ended the life of Ivan W. Smith.
