In the autumn of 2021, the life of 17-year-old Altamir Mayweather was tragically cut short in a burst of gunfire. A promising standout basketball player at Weequahic High School, Mayweather was a well-known figure in his Newark, New Jersey community. On the afternoon of November 16th, police were called to the Oscar Miles Housing Complex on Court Street, where they discovered a chaotic and violent scene.
Mayweather and another individual had both sustained gunshot wounds. Emergency services arrived quickly, and both victims were rushed to University Hospital for treatment. While the second victim would ultimately survive their injuries, Mayweather’s condition was far more critical. Despite the efforts of medical staff, he succumbed to his wounds and was pronounced dead at 3:38 p.m.
on November 17, 2021.
The Essex County Prosecutor’s Office Homicide/Major Crimes Task Force, in conjunction with the Newark Police Department, immediately launched an investigation into the shooting. Authorities appealed to the public for any information that might lead to the apprehension of those responsible for Mayweather's death. However, in the days and weeks that followed the incident, no arrests were made, and no suspects were publicly identified. The investigation was described as active and ongoing as authorities continued to seek answers in the untimely death of the young athlete.
