The Black / African American male, a resident of neighboring East Orange, was in the 200 block of Mulberry Street on September 22, 2019, when the tragic incident unfolded. At approximately 10:45 p.m., Williams was shot, the sound of gunfire piercing the night air near the Prudential Center.
Emergency services were quick to respond, and Williams was rushed
to University Hospital in a desperate attempt to save his life. Despite the efforts of medical staff, he was pronounced dead at 11:07 p.m. The proximity of the shooting to the major entertainment venue was noted, though no events were taking place at the time. This incident was the second fatal shooting to occur in Newark that weekend, adding to a somber mood in the city.
In the wake of the shooting, the Essex County Prosecutor's Office Homicide/Major Crimes Task Force, in conjunction with the Newark Police Department, launched a thorough investigation into the death of Jamal Williams.
