In the late hours of a cold January night in Camden, New Jersey, the life of 28-year-old Andrew M. Ayala was irrevocably altered. On January 3, 2022, at approximately 10:28 p.m., the sound of gunfire shattered the quiet at the intersection of North 20th Street and Wayne Avenue. When officers from the Camden County Metro Police Department arrived at the scene, they found Andrew Ayala suffering from a gunshot wound. He was immediately transported to Cooper University Hospital for medical attention.
For months, Ayala fought for his life. He was eventually transferred to Acuity Specialty Hospital of New Jersey in Atlantic City, where he continued to receive care. Despite the efforts of medical professionals, his battle came to a tragic end. On Saturday, May 21, 2022, at 5:01 p.m., Andrew M. Ayala was pronounced deceased.
An autopsy later confirmed that the cause of his death was multiple gunshot wounds with complications, and the manner of death was officially ruled a homicide.
The investigation into Ayala's fatal shooting remains ongoing, a collaborative effort between the Camden County Prosecutor's Office Homicide Unit and the Camden County Metro Police Department. To date, the individual or individuals responsible for his death have not been apprehended, and no arrests have been made.
