On the evening of August 28, 2021, a young father named Darnell Farrish, 19, was fatally shot in Camden, New Jersey. The incident occurred around 8:01 p.m. on the 2300 block of South 8th Street, between Sylvan and Fairview Streets. Officers from the Camden County Police Department responded to a ShotSpotter activation and found Farrish suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. He was rushed to Cooper University Hospital, where he was pronounced deceased at approximately 8:18 p.m.
His family described him as a loving father, son, brother, and cousin who was family-oriented.
For months, the case remained unsolved, with few initial clues to lead investigators to a suspect. The Camden County Prosecutor's Office released surveillance video to the public in hopes of generating leads. The video showed muzzle flashes and a suspect running from the scene. A significant breakthrough in the investigation came after a local news station, CBS3, featured the case in a segment called 'CBS3 Mysteries.'. Following the broadcast, a crucial tip was provided to detectives.
In May 2022, authorities announced the arrest of 28-year-old Taquan A. Tingle of Woodlynne. Tingle was charged with first-degree murder and several weapons offenses in connection with Farrish's death. Investigators revealed that the motive for the shooting allegedly stemmed from a dispute over a $150 debt. A search of Tingle's home uncovered a 9mm 'ghost gun' that ballistics testing confirmed was the weapon used in the homicide. At the time of his arrest for the murder, Tingle was already incarcerated at the Camden County Correctional Facility on unrelated charges. A judge ordered him to be held without bail on the new murder charge.
