In the late evening of Monday, October 10, 2022, the life of 25-year-old Daveigh Brooks was tragically cut short in Trenton, New Jersey. A former standout track athlete at Burlington City High School and Bloomfield College, Brooks was discovered fatally shot in the driver's seat of a black Ford Fusion. The vehicle was found parked in the middle of Greeley Alley, near the 300 block of Ellis Avenue.
Law enforcement was drawn to the scene around 9:25 p.m.
after a Shot Spotter activation registered multiple gunshots in the area. Ewing police officers who were nearby conducting a traffic stop also heard the gunfire and responded. Upon their arrival, they found Brooks, a resident of nearby Ewing, who had sustained several gunshot wounds. Despite the immediate response from law enforcement, he was pronounced dead at the scene.
Brooks was remembered as a talented athlete who had excelled in track and field, winning a number of 400 and 800-meter races during his high school years. He went on to major in criminal justice at Bloomfield College, where he was named the 2018 Rookie of the Year in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference. Those who knew him described him as a positive and active young man. His family, who have roots in Trenton, were left heartbroken by the sudden loss.
In the wake of the shooting, the Mercer County Homicide Task Force and the Trenton Police Department launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death of Daveigh Brooks. Authorities urged anyone with information to come forward to assist in their inquiries. However, no arrests have been made in connection with the shooting, and no suspects have been publicly identified. The investigation into the fatal shooting remains ongoing.
