On a Sunday evening in late autumn, the life of 15-year-old Al-Sanir Hall was violently taken. The teenager, a Black male from Newark, New Jersey, was found on November 27, 2022, at the intersection of Melrose Avenue and Wills Place in the neighboring city of Irvington. Irvington police had responded to a call about an unconscious person at 6:59 p.m. and discovered Al-Sanir suffering from a gunshot wound.
He was pronounced dead at the scene at 7:24 p.m.
The investigation, led by the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office Homicide/Major Crimes Task Force, soon uncovered disturbing circumstances surrounding the murder. Investigators came to believe that Al-Sanir had been shot in Newark, and his body was then transported and left in Irvington. This theory was compounded by a video that circulated on social media, which appeared to show the moments leading up to his death. In the footage, a person believed to be Al-Sanir was recorded being stripped of his clothing and brutally beaten by several males inside a vehicle. Another individual was also shown being struck by the attackers in the video.
In the early stages of the investigation, authorities appealed to the public for help. The Essex County Sheriff's Crime Stoppers Program offered a reward of up to $10,000 for information that would lead to the arrest of the person or persons responsible for Al-Sanir's death. The public was asked to contact the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office tips line with any information that could aid the case.
The investigation eventually led to a prosecution in the case. A defendant named Tolbert was tried for the murder of Al-Sanir Hall. Following the trial, a jury found Tolbert guilty of the crime. With this conviction, the case is considered solved.
