On December 3, 1964, a tragic sequence of events unfolded at a residence in Detroit, Michigan, resulting in the deaths of seven individuals, including a young child named Roger A. Hill. The incident, which shocked the local community, was a mass murder-suicide perpetrated by 28-year-old factory worker James D. Burgan. Motivated by a domestic dispute after his wife, Joyce Marie Driver Burgan, reportedly decided to end their marriage, James carried out a calculated attack within their home using a. 22 caliber rifle.
The victims of the shooting included James's wife, 22-year-old Joyce, and five children. Among them were Joyce’s two children from a previous marriage, Roger A. Hill, a 6-year-old male, and his 5-year-old sister, Kathy Hill. Also killed were the couple's own children: 2-year-old Linda Burgan and 7-month-old Robert Burgan. A family friend, 22-year-old Billie Jean Henry Nolan, who was present at the home during the incident, was also fatally shot.
The bodies were discovered in various locations throughout the house. Joyce was found in a bathroom, while Roger was discovered on the ground floor. The other children were found in an upstairs bedroom, and Mrs. Nolan was located on the first floor. Following the murders, James Burgan took his own life with the same weapon. His body was found in a chair near a telephone on the first floor.
The crime was reported to authorities by Joyce’s sister, Mary Judkins, who received a chilling phone call from James Burgan shortly before his death. During the call, he confessed to killing his family and stated his intention to commit suicide. Although police rushed to the scene after the notification, they arrived too late to intervene. Because the perpetrator died by suicide at the scene, there were no arrests, trials, or convictions in connection with the case.
