Tyrone Delaney, a 26-year-old Black male, found his life tragically cut short in the early morning hours of June 22, 2016, in Detroit, Michigan. The fatal encounter unfolded on Snowden Street, stemming from a heated dispute over his children with his ex-girlfriend, Victoria Solomon. Delaney, a father to three of Solomon's children, had been looking forward to spending time with two of them before a planned move to Atlanta.
Solomon had initially dropped the children off at the home of Delaney's mother for the visit.
Later that night, the situation escalated when Solomon returned, demanding to take the children back. Delaney's refusal to let them go sparked a confrontation that would prove to be his last. As the argument intensified, Solomon’s then-boyfriend, 18-year-old Montez Maxwell, emerged from a hiding spot nearby and opened fire on Delaney. He was shot multiple times in front of his family members, including his sister, and was pronounced dead at the scene.
In the immediate aftermath of the shooting, Victoria Solomon was taken into custody at the scene. Montez Maxwell initially fled in a Cadillac that was waiting nearby but later turned himself in to the authorities. Both Solomon and Maxwell were subsequently charged with first-degree premeditated murder and one count of felony firearm. They were arraigned and held in custody as they awaited further legal proceedings. The case drew significant attention due to the domestic nature of the dispute and the heartbreaking reality that the violence erupted over a disagreement about parental time.
