In the late hours of a September evening in Detroit, 27-year-old Antonio Jenkins was seated in the driver's seat of his car near Joy and Lawton. It was approximately 11:35 p.m. on Friday, September 1, 2023, and what was to be a peaceful moment was tragically cut short. Antonio, a male resident of Detroit, was accompanied by another man, 21-year-old Martell Lanier Blunt, who was in the passenger seat.
Suddenly, the quiet of the night was shattered by the sound of gunfire. Blunt allegedly produced a handgun and shot Antonio multiple times in the head. When police and medics arrived at the scene, they found Antonio unresponsive in his vehicle. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Following an investigation into the fatal shooting, Martell Lanier Blunt, also from Detroit, was arrested and charged in connection with Antonio Jenkins' death. The charges brought against him were severe: first-degree murder and felony firearm. Blunt was arraigned on September 4, 2023, in the 36th District Court and was remanded to jail. A probable cause conference was scheduled for September 14, 2023, with a preliminary examination set for September 21, 2023.
