Matthew Edmond Bowens, a 21-year-old police officer with the Detroit Police Department, tragically lost his life on February 16, 2004, during a routine traffic stop. Officer Bowens, along with his partner, Officer Jennifer Fettig, was conducting the stop on Gilbert Avenue at around 2 a.m. As they were calling in the vehicle's license plate information, the suspect exited his vehicle and opened fire with a .40 caliber handgun.
