On a tragic Tuesday morning in Detroit, Michigan, 77-year-old Stanley Hays approached the Comerica branch on the city's northeast side, completely unaware of the violent scene unfolding within. It was March 11, 1997, and what began as a routine day would end in heartbreak for the community. Inside the bank, a troubled 21-year-old named Allen Lane Griffin Jr. had embarked on a deadly rampage.
Griffin's violent spree began even before he reached the bank. He had already shot and wounded a police recruit applicant and stolen a car to make his way to the Comerica branch. Upon entering the bank, Griffin, armed with a 12-gauge pump shotgun, created an atmosphere of terror. He shot and killed bank employee James Isom, 25, and the bank manager, 52-year-old Stanley Pijanowski III. He also shot and wounded the assistant branch manager.
As Griffin exited the bank, he encountered Stanley Hays. Despite police orders for him to stay away, Hays, seemingly oblivious to the danger, continued toward the bank and was taken hostage. Griffin dragged Hays into a nearby alley, where he fired at police before fatally shooting Hays in the head. The confrontation ended when police officers returned fire, killing Griffin.
Investigations following the incident revealed that Griffin was distraught over a failed marriage and had a history of drug problems. He was also wanted for a probation violation stemming from a prior drug conviction. Authorities concluded that Griffin acted alone, and no further arrests were made in connection with the tragic deaths of Stanley Hays and the two bank employees. The incident left the community in shock, mourning the loss of innocent lives caught in a senseless act of violence.
