The perpetrator was James D. Burgan, the estranged husband of Billie Jean's friend, Joyce Marie Driver Burgan.
Fueled by anger over his wife's decision to leave him, James arrived at the home armed with a. 22 caliber rifle and a chilling resolve. Inside the house, he confronted his wife, Billie Jean, and his own children. In a brutal rampage, he shot and killed Billie Jean, Joyce, and their four young children. The children who perished in the massacre were Roger Hill, age 7, and Kathy Hill, age 5, from Joyce's previous marriage, and the couple's two younger children, 2-year-old Linda and 7-month-old Robert. Each victim was found to have been shot once in the head.
The gruesome discovery was made after James Burgan placed a chilling phone call to his sister-in-law, confessing to the murders and stating his intention to take his own life. Although the police were immediately notified, they arrived at the scene to find a house of horrors. The bodies of the victims were discovered in various rooms throughout the home. Billie Jean and one of the children were found on the first floor, while Joyce's body was located in the bathroom. The other children were found in an upstairs bedroom. James Burgan was found deceased in a chair near a telephone, having turned the rifle on himself.
