On May 3, 1986, a tragic event unfolded in Otsego, Michigan, leading to the death of Deputy Sheriff Carl L. Darling, Jr., a 35-year-old male who had served with the Otsego County Sheriff's Office for three years. While on duty, Deputy Darling had picked up a pedestrian. In a sudden and violent turn of events, the individual he had intended to help abducted him and then fatally shot him.
The suspect responsible for Deputy Darling's murder did not remain at large for long. Following the shooting, he fled the state of Michigan and made his way to Georgia. There, his flight from justice came to a decisive end. A special agent with the Georgia Bureau of Investigation located the suspect, and in the ensuing confrontation, the suspect was shot and killed. This action brought a swift conclusion to the search, and the man who murdered Deputy Darling never faced a trial. Deputy Darling was survived by his wife and two children.
