A beloved husband and father, Gary L. Gatewood, a 42-year-old male, passed away in what was described as a tragic hunting accident on September 4, 2024. Though his family resided in St. Johns, Michigan, a community not far from Laingsburg, his death occurred while he was goose hunting by himself. An avid outdoorsman, Gatewood was passionate about hunting and fishing.
On that Wednesday, while attempting to fix an issue with his rifle, the firearm discharged, striking him in the thigh.
Despite the severe injury, Gatewood was able to call 911 for help. Tragically, he succumbed to the wound before emergency services could reach him. His wife recounted the devastating event, noting that the 911 dispatcher could hear him losing consciousness during the call. The incident occurred just one day before he and his wife would have celebrated their ninth wedding anniversary.
There have been no reports of any arrests or suspects in connection with Gatewood's death, as all available information indicates it was an unfortunate and fatal accident. The community rallied around his wife and five children in the wake of the tragedy, organizing fundraisers and offering support to the grieving family.
