A 30-year veteran of the Traverse City Police Department, his life was cut short after a tense standoff on Wellington Street. For over an hour, Finch had been negotiating with a man who had armed himself with two rifles and two pistols on his porch. The situation escalated tragically when the suspect opened fire with an AR-15 rifle, striking the sergeant multiple times.
