In the line of duty, Sergeant Dennis Warren Finch, a 52-year-old male, made the ultimate sacrifice. A 30-year veteran of the Traverse City Police Department, his life was cut short after a tense standoff on Wellington Street. For over an hour, Finch had been negotiating with a man who had armed himself with two rifles and two pistols on his porch. The situation escalated tragically when the suspect opened fire with an AR-15 rifle, striking the sergeant multiple times.
Despite the
immediate danger, two of his fellow officers bravely pulled Sergeant Finch from the porch. He was rushed to Munson Medical Center, but the wounds he sustained proved to be fatal, and he passed away the following morning. The community and his department mourned the loss of a dedicated officer who was survived by his wife, two daughters, a grandchild, his mother, and ten siblings. In his honor, the law enforcement center that houses both the city police and the Grand Traverse County Sheriff's Department was named after him.
The suspect, who was wounded in the initial exchange of gunfire, barricaded himself inside his house for a grueling ten hours before finally surrendering to authorities. Following his arrest, he was convicted of the murder of Sergeant Finch. The court sentenced him to life in prison without the possibility of parole, ensuring that he would be held accountable for his actions that day.
