On a late summer afternoon in Monroe, Michigan, the life of 31-year-old Michael Ronald Beck Jr. was tragically cut short. On September 2, 2023, Beck was fatally shot during a carjacking outside the Highlander Market on East Front Street. The incident unfolded after two men, identified as Stephen Michael Jones Jr., 29, of Monroe, and Ronnie L. Oliver, 44, of Ann Arbor, robbed the market at gunpoint.
After robbing the store, Jones and Oliver accosted Beck and another man, Adam Helton, who were in a blue Ford F-150 parked in front of the market. The assailants ordered both men out of the truck. A witness standing nearby was shot at but was not injured. Both Beck and Helton were then shot by the suspects. Michael Ronald Beck Jr. died at the scene from his injuries. Helton was seriously wounded but ultimately recovered.
Following the shooting, Jones and Oliver fled in the stolen Ford F-150, sparking a multi-state police chase. Law enforcement located the vehicle and the suspects several hours later at a rest area near Bowling Green, Ohio. When approached, the suspects fled, leading police on a high-speed pursuit southbound on I-75 into Hancock County. During the chase, Jones and Oliver fired multiple times at the pursuing officers, who returned fire. The pursuit ended when the stolen truck crashed into a ditch. After a standoff, both suspects were taken into custody. Jones sustained serious injuries during the incident and was flown to a hospital, while Oliver was taken to a hospital for precautionary reasons before being jailed.
In the subsequent legal proceedings, Stephen Michael Jones Jr. faced multiple charges, including second-degree murder, armed robbery, carjacking, and assault with intent to murder. In December 2023, he pleaded to the charges. At his sentencing, the court heard emotional statements from Beck's parents. Jones showed no remorse and had a vulgar outburst directed at the victim's family. He was sentenced to up to 40 years in prison. The case against his co-defendant, Ronnie Lee Oliver Jr., was scheduled for a preliminary examination in February 2025.
