In the winter of 2019 in Monroe, Michigan, the life of 38-year-old Gregory Thomas James was tragically cut short. On Tuesday, January 22, James was fatally shot on Kentucky Avenue in a violent encounter that also left a woman injured. The female victim, whose identity was protected, survived her injuries and was later able to identify the person responsible for the shooting.
Following the incident, law enforcement identified 23-year-old Marquis Terrell Evans, also known as Marcus, as the shooter. An investigation revealed that James and the female victim had gone to Evans's residence to complain about an issue. The exchange became heated, leading Evans to produce a handgun and fire five shots. One bullet struck and seriously wounded the woman. Three bullets hit James, with two causing superficial wounds, but a fatal shot to his neck resulted in his almost instantaneous death.
After the shooting, Evans fled the scene, prompting a search by the Monroe City Police Department with assistance from the United States Marshal Service. He was apprehended over a week later. In March 2020, a Monroe County jury deliberated for approximately four hours after two days of testimony. Marquis Terrell Evans was found guilty of Second Degree Murder for the death of Gregory James and Assault with Intent to do Great Bodily Harm less than Murder for the shooting of the female victim.
