On a tragic day in April 2009, the life of a promising young woman was cut short on the campus of Henry Ford Community College in Dearborn, Michigan. Asia McGowan, a 20-year-old aspiring actress and dancer, was killed by a fellow student in what police have described as a murder-suicide. A popular YouTuber, she had expressed concerns about her online life intersecting with her real life.
The perpetrator was identified as 28-year-old Anthony Powell, a classmate of McGowan's in a theater course. Powell, who reportedly suffered from mental illness, cornered McGowan in an empty classroom in the MacKenzie Fine Arts Center and fatally shot her with a shotgun before taking his own life. Witnesses on campus reported hearing a gunshot, and upon investigation, police discovered the bodies of both McGowan and Powell.
Friends and family of McGowan described her as a beautiful and talented individual with dreams of pursuing a career in acting and dance. She was a graduate of Ecorse High School and was one of four siblings. While her sister mentioned that McGowan had spoken of Powell and believed they might have been casually seeing each other, her father had never heard of him. It appears Powell had developed an obsession with McGowan, following her online presence.
Powell's parents revealed that their son had a history of depression but had not shown any signs that he was capable of such violence. In his own online videos, Powell had discussed his struggles with depression and had even contemplated suicide. The devastating event left the college community in shock and mourning, leading to a temporary closure of the campus.
