Saja Aljanabi, a 29-year-old Iraqi American woman, had sought refuge with her family in Dearborn, Michigan, from the turmoil in the Middle East, aspiring to build a life in the United States. She had recently achieved a milestone by passing her driver's test and was diligently preparing to take the exam to become a U.S. citizen. However, her dreams were tragically cut short on the night of September 6, 2019. While sitting in her car outside her family's home on Bingham Street, she became the victim of a senseless act of violence.
That evening, three teenagers were in the midst of a crime spree that began with the armed robbery of a 49-year-old woman on Steadman Street. Less than twenty minutes later, their path crossed with Saja's. In an apparent robbery attempt, she was shot. Her brother, Ali Aljanabi, hearing the gunshot, rushed outside to find his sister grievously wounded. Despite his desperate attempts to render aid, her injuries were too severe, and she died on the way to the hospital. As the assailants fled the scene, they also fired a shot at a 56-year-old man, who was not injured.
The investigation into Saja's murder led to the swift arrest of three teenagers: a 13-year-old, 14-year-old Demaurio Dismuke, and 17-year-old Jamel Philson. The 14-year-old was reportedly wearing a court-ordered GPS tether at the time, which placed him at the scene of the crime. All three were charged in connection with the crime spree and Saja's death. Dismuke and Philson were ultimately tried as adults.
In the ensuing legal proceedings, Demaurio Dismuke and Jamel Philson were sentenced to 16 to 30 years in prison for second-degree murder, with Dismuke receiving an additional two years for a felony firearm conviction. The youngest of the three, who was 13 at the time of the incident, was charged as an adult-designated juvenile. He was convicted of two counts of armed robbery and one count of felony firearm, while the murder charge against him was dismissed. He received a blended sentence of juvenile probation and a delayed adult sentence. The tragic and untimely death of Saja Aljanabi left her family devastated, forever altering their lives.
